Election Day -68: A typical day out in the Constituency

with 2 comments

Leave the house about 10.15 to make sure I’m in good time for our action day. A 46 bus comes immediately and there’s no traffic, so I arrive early at the Chair’s house, our base for the day. We do a bit of chatting and planning and then news comes through that a photographer from one of the local papers is coming down to take a few pics.

A few of assemble at the agreed rendezvous and wait…. and wait. It transpires that the instruction from the journalist didn’t get through to the photographer. But it’s not all in vain – we learn about a contentious planning issue from a passer-by and promise to look into it.

Back to base to pick up leaflets – we’re trying to deliver across a whole ward today, and there’s a good turnout, so it looks feasible. We’ve got a couple of helpers who’ve come up all the way from Cardiff (! – repaying a favour) and one of them, Sarah, comes out to help me do a round. It’s a tricky one, with lots of difficult-to-get-into apartment blocks, and after an initial rebuttal from a young guy with great trainers but a stuffy attitude we then strike lucky with friendly people who let us in – one a Greek guy who we have an interesting conversation with about the economic situation in Athens.

We get the whole walk done quickly and return to base to do some canvassing. I’m having a good chat on the doorstep with some Lib Dem supporters when the mobile rings – the photographer’s finally appeared some four hours later and we hasten back to the rendezvous. Plenty of pics taken and lots of locals say hallo.

By now it’s late afteroon and it’s starting to rain again. Time for a cup of tea and the football results. Man City beat Chelsea! The one time I didn’t want that to happen – Spurs need that top 4 place.

Back tomorrow, same time, same channel.

  1. This is a good and easy read – informative and fresh from the barricades. My subbed. MB for MP.

  2. Hi Mark. It was a real pleasure to help you and John. Good luck with the campaign – you deserve every success. I thought it was a very well-organised campaign with great candidates, and a good reception on the ground. “Pob lwc!”, as we say round these parts! Ed
