Election Day -55: Something is Rotten in the State of Westminster Parking

with 4 comments

Westminster City Council has cancelled the tendering of its four-year parking contract after a legal flaw and must start again from scratch. How much has this error alone cost council tax payers?

The council had already named Mouchel as the winner of the £50million contract to provide parking enforcement services across the borough, but had to scrap the process after in-house lawyers revealed they had “judged the preferred bidder on price criteria which went beyond what was originally published to tenderers”. In other words the bidders weren’t on a level playing field. Was this mere incompetence or something more sleazy? A full investigation has been called for, and may provide the answer.

Lib Dems are calling for fair and open local government, something which seems to be an anathema to Westminster. And the Council’s latest debacle on parking demands change – remember this is a council which is so dogmatic it’s the only London borough which charges motorbikes to park, even though it costs more to administer than the revenue raised from the bikers.

  1. Mark, someone needs to get in to this council and knock some heads together. The incumbents seem to think they are above everyone, and better than their constituents.

Their parking dept. is a sham, and the bike tax a total disgrace. More power to your elbow, with which these greedy councillors will soon be shoved into unemployment themselves, rather than sacking 300 then gorging on expensive nosh.

  2. Well said Mark! The bike parking ‘tax’ is ludicrous on all levels, especially given the congestion-busting nature of motorbike transport. Unfortunately I don’t live on your patch, or you would get my vote. But given that the Libs seem to be the only party to be giving even some thought to the imbalance between state and individual (eg the limited but at least it’s a start) Freedom Bill, I think I will be voting Lib Dem for the first time in my life in May.
