Election Day -40: Earth Hour

Between 8.30 and 9.30pm this evening, we managed the big switch-off – gas and electricity off for an hour. Not that difficult really, but made easier for us because we were having friends round but had to cancel as the chef was ill. My wife says I cook once a year, but it’s more like once a month, honest. And as she’s been ill, I’ve done two months worth over the weekend…

I don’t know if it was because of Earth Hour, but it was amazingly dark and quiet round here this evening. Probably more to do with the fact that the road’s closed at one end due to the water mains replacement work, which means we currently live in a quiet cul-de-sac.

I do feel very sorry for the local traders – yet another blight on their trade – but there has been an amusing by-product of the roadworks. Although it clearly says “Road Closed” at the end of the street, a number of drivers insist on finding out for themselves. It seems the posher the car, the less likely they are to take no for an answer, resulting in embarrassing three point turns grudgingly performed. A battle of two Bentleys took place right outside yesterday, neither alpha male wanting to give way to the other, but they’d have had to sit there all day otherwise, so eventually eeked past each other in small movements.

So hopefully a quiet night ahead down our dead end, albeit a shorter one.
